P-122 Gastrointestinal side effects of morphine in cancer pain: A comparison between the smoking and non-smoking patients

The use of morphine analgesics is associated with a number side effects, especially morphine-induced gastrointestinal dysfunction. Gastrointestinal effects have negative impact on patient quality life. complex relationship between nicotine and opioids controversial one still not well understood. Some animal studies suggest that binds some opioid receptors. aim this study was to prospectively compare the incidence smokers non-smokers in cancer pain patients. conducted our institution 2019 2021. We included all patients receiving oral morphine, at least 60 mg daily, for pain, week or longer before inclusion. All received sustained-release sulfate immediate release. used prospective survey questionnaire administered weekly 4 weeks. participants were free psychiatric disturbance, substance abuse (other than nicotine), had no renal hepatic disease failure, disease. Patients divided into two groups: (n=40) (n=40). recorded compared groups. Of 96 patients, 80 completed entire by answering consecutive occasions. There 40 non-smokers. group men 17 23 women. mean age 50 years (range: 26-65). were: constipation 20%, nausea 18%, dry mouth reflux 5%, dyspepsia 4%, anorexia 1%, abdominal 1%. 65% 60%, vomiting 7%, 6%, 6%. often moderate groups; we rotated just non-smoker as result vomiting.
